Power flushing involves the cleaning of your central heating system and/or boiler. Over time, Magnetite can build up within your radiators and pipework and can affect the performance of your heating. Magnetite or sludge is made up of a combination of dirt, mites and corroded metals and can be found within any part of your central heating system. It not only creates cold spots within your radiators, but if left untreated  can also create blockages and of greater concern; as it is corrosive, it may well rot the new aluminum heat exchanges that are common place within modern boilers.That is why, whenever a new boiler is installed, manufacturers recommend a power flush; to increase the lifespan of the boiler. Many warranties on new boilers are deemed invalid without a power flush being performed as part of the boiler installation process.

 

 

What are the common signs that a central heating system needs a damage.

 

The following are the usual tell-tale signs of a central heating system in need of a power flush:

  • Cold spots or areas within the radiators
  • A noisy central heating system
  • Heating bills for the property are excessively high
  • The radiators need regular bleeding
  • Dirty colouration of the heating water (evident in the F and E tank in the attic typically)
  • Regular replacement of heating parts – pump and valves etc

 

How do we perform a ‘Power Flush’?

We use a  power flushing machine, which  is a device with a pump that is attached to the central heating system at a particular point. The process involves introducing fresh water and cleaning chemicals (Fernox) and essentially cleaning the pipes out. The water is then released (several times) and finally once the heating system and boiler are cleaned, we fill the system up again and introduce Neutralising crystals and Inhibitor once more to protect your system for the long term.

At PlumbWise, power flushing is a common procedure and a typical power flush process usually takes between 4 and 8 hours to do, and there is absolutely no mess.

When we install replacement boilers a power flush is carried out, unless the client specifically asks us not to perform one, or if we think that the system is too old or weak* to handle pumped water being put through it. Therefore, all our plumbing and heating engineers are fully trained in power flushing and are very familiar with hot spot areas where magnetitie and blockages can commonly occur in central heating systems.

Power Flushing Costs

A power flush of your central heating system including all the chemicals, power flushed to BS7593 standards will cost £250.00  for up to five radiators and £35.00 per radiator thereafter. We also offer the supply and fit of a Magnaclean Unit for £130.00 when combined with a Power flush. (All prices quoted are subject to V.A.T).

* In certain situations it might not be suitable for a Power flush to be carried out. If, for example, the pipework, the radiator valves and/ or the radiators are so old that performing a power flush might lead to potential leaking issues. In this event a chemical flush (without the pump machine) and the installation of a Magnaclean unit might be more sensible. Our plumbing and heating engineers will advise when this is
deemed necessary. If, in the unlikely event, that there are any leaks resulting from a power flush,
then Plumbing Wise is in no way liable for any damage as we cannot determine the strengths or integrity of the pipework or appliances within a property. We can merely make a general assessment that is all.
